On Saturday 11 November, the CRA arranged a clean-up in Delta Park. Over 30 residents and Johannesburg City Park and Zoo (JCPZ) came together to clean up the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary in Delta Park, right in the heart of Johannesburg. The efforts were so impactful that a 4-ton truck and a Toyota Hilux were filled with refuse in just three hours, thanks to the generous contribution of resident, Jif’s, truck.

This cleanup initiative, spearheaded by enthusiastic locals, is not a one-time event. A few weeks ago a similar team go together to repair the fence which borders this bird sanctuary, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the preservation of this natural gem.

The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary, nestled within Delta Park, stands as one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in the province, established by the Bloom brothers in 1975. Spanning 104 hectares, Delta Park encompasses grasslands, forested areas, and three dams, creating an oasis for nature lovers.

The sanctuary has been a haven for over 250 bird species, with its two dams attracting water birds such as ducks, moorhens, and coots. Hides overlooking the dams provide a tranquil space for bird watchers to observe various species engaging in nesting, feeding, and song, fostering a deeper connection with nature.

The cleanup initiative not only reflects the community’s hands-on approach to environmental stewardship but also serves as an inspiring example of how collective action can make a lasting difference in maintaining the beauty of our natural spaces.
