JoziTrails is driving an initiative to enhance local biodiversity and connect green spaces through the creation of urban biodiversity corridors. This project aims to empower residents and organisations in our area to play a vital role in ecological restoration by establishing gardens and green spaces that support local fauna and flora, forming stepping-stone links to existing conservation areas.
What is the Biodiversity Corridor Project?
The project, based on a proven framework developed by urban ecological expert Frances Taylor, integrates community gardens, private spaces, and local parks into a cohesive ecological network. Using locally appropriate, indigenous plants, these corridors will promote biodiversity, support wildlife, and inspire residents to actively engage with nature.
How Can You Get Involved?
They already have a number of volunteers who are working on the project, but they need additional help. They are looking for committed volunteers with specific skills to join the team and help bring this vision to life. They are looking for individuals to assist with the following roles:
- Project Manager: Oversee the project’s progress and ensure smooth coordination.
- Local Botanist: Provide expertise on indigenous plants and their role in the corridor.
- Architect or CAD Specialist: Assist with mapping and design work to visualise the corridor.
- Graphic Designer: Create engaging visuals to communicate the project’s goals and progress.
- Public Engagement Specialist: Develop strategies to inspire and mobilise the community.
What Will the Project Achieve?
The initiative will focus on four key phases:
- Planning: Establishing partnerships, identifying priority areas, and setting goals.
- Design: Developing citywide corridor maps and creating accessible garden plans.
- Training: Equipping residents with the skills needed to create and maintain gardens.
- Activation: Engaging the community through campaigns, flagship species, and an online platform.
