On 7th October we commenced with the rebuild of perimeter fence of the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary. We also did a massive cleanup and two truck loads of litter was removed from this conservation zone. It was an epic day!
We would like to give everyone a sense of just how many people and organizations got involved, demonstrating the widespread passion and love for our park.
  • Firstly thanks to JoburgParks who showed up at 8am sharp and helped us all day with the fencing work. Many holes were dug in tremendous heat and the team kept going right till the end and contineud with fencing work the following week. In particular, thanks to Mr Masila and Mr Percy Rathogwa from Joburg City Parks—we look forward to working closely with you gentlemen in the future.
  • Thank you to Bubele who sent a team to help with the cleanup work.
  • Thank you to AfriForum Roodepoort branch who showed up in force (and numbers) and helped with fencing, cleanup and also with safety assessment of the bird sanctuary.
  • Thank you to Talisman Hire Blairgowrie who rented us an auger at reduced rates for the day—a massive help!
  • Thank you to Jeff and David from Jozi Trails Management Company who personally came to help with fencing work.
  • Thank you to Richard from Camp Delta Scout Grounds for supporting and giving us access to water so we could mix the concrete footings for the gumpoles.
  • Thank you to Craigpark Residents Association (CRA) for facilitating fund raising, and the many residents who donated for the needed supplies.
  • Then, last but not least, thank you to the residents associations for helping to get the word out to nearby neighbours: Parkhurst Residents and Business Owners Association, CRA, Linden Residents Association, Blairgowrie Community Association.

Most importantly thank you to all the residents who came to help on the day. I think the broad collaboration that we saw yesterday is proof that we can pull together as a community and address our common concerns. The situation around us may seem hopeless, but it’s not. We just need to get more involved. We hope even more residents come to help in the future, and we look forward to sharing some of the bigger ideas and plans we have to make Delta Park amazing.

In the meanwhile, we will continue with the short term fence rebuilding work. If anyone has it on their heart to support this project through donations, please click here. It is important to use reference “delta fence” or similar so the funds remain ringfenced for the project.
We will share future updates and rebuild get togethers here and on the RA communication channels.
